Also known as Type 01 or Solo Wing Normal Class, the Blue Dragon was a dragon form featured in the Saturn Panzer Dragoon games and as an unlockable extra in Panzer Dragoon Orta. It had a striking dark blue torso wrapped in white armour, with striped wings of light and dark orange. The Blue Dragon featured a lengthy, white horn that set it apart from other dragon forms in the series. Panzer Dragoon Orta’s encyclopaedia entry on the Blue Dragon describes it as “wrapped in a beautiful white shell” and having “a distinctive long horn, reminiscent of the ramming horns of ancient battleships”. The same encyclopaedia entry states that this dragon was also called “Solowing” without a space. The Blue Dragon was the first form of the Heresy Dragon that players were introduced to and many fans consider it be the definitive appearance of what a Panzer Dragoon dragon looks like.
The Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon Zwei
In Panzer Dragoon Zwei, players can obtain the Blue Dragon in the final episode by getting one hundred percent enemy shot down ratio in the previous six episodes. While in this form, Lagi fought the Guardian Dragon of Shelcoof resulting in the temporary defeat of that guardian. The Blue Dragon is referred to by the name ‘Type 01’ in Pandra’s Box, suggesting that this may be the true name of this dragon form. However, it is also possible that Type 01 was short for ‘Prototype 01’, a name which may have referred to the dragon itself, just as Prototype 02 referred to the Dark Dragon.
Obtaining the Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon Zwei gives players a different ending, epilogue D, which features a corresponding dragon crest with an image of the Blue Dragon on it. Players have speculated that this epilogue was meant to be the game’s true ending, as the dragon crest is the same as the crest which Edge finds inside of Shelcoof in Panzer Dragoon Saga. Sestren also showed Lundi riding Lagi in a Blue Dragon form when fighting the Guardian Dragon in his memory orbs in Panzer Dragoon Saga.
The Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon
The Blue Dragon was the original and only dragon form in the first Panzer Dragoon game, known in that game only as “the armoured blue dragon”. It is unclear whether the Sky Rider’s dragon started in this form or whether the Sky Rider and his dragon went through a separate adventure, with the dragon changing through series of morphs before reaching this final form.
The Blue Dragon in the original Panzer Dragoon did not have a berserk attack, suggesting that it may have been a different dragon from Lundi’s dragon. Alternatively, Team Andromeda may simply not have thought up the berserk attack at that point; the lack of a berserk attack may not have any relation to the canonical story of the dragon. Although the Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon did not have a berserk attack in game, the dragon executed a berserk or berserk-like attack at the end of the game when it destroyed the Tower. The dragon’s white horn lit up into a glowing light blue/white colour in preparation for this destructive act.
The Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon Saga
At the start of Panzer Dragoon Saga, players controlling Edge can see a dragon crest on the right hand wall of the bottom floor of the ruins below Excavation Site #4. This crest was visually similar to the crest seen in Panzer Dragoon Zwei’s epilogue D, containing the image of the Blue Dragon.
Later in the game, Edge and his dragon entered the damaged Shelcoof ship and entered a series of passages. It was there that they encountered a ‘spirit dragon’, a holographic representation of the Blue Dragon. This spirit dragon led Edge and his dragon to a chamber deep within the ship called the Genesis Chamber. After activating and obtaining the dragon crest within this chamber, a baby dragon emerged and followed Edge’s dragon. After obtaining the Light Wing form, Edge took the dragon crest and the baby dragon to the Red Ruins inside the Forest of Zoah. It was here that he placed the Shelcoof dragon crest on the pedestal, and shortly after Edge’s dragon combined with the baby dragon, forming the Solo Wing.
The normal class of the Solo Wing was visually comparable to the Blue Dragon featured in the original game and Panzer Dragoon Zwei, while the other classes represented other forms from Panzer Dragoon Zwei. It is possible that the Solo Wing Normal Class was meant to be a different dragon form from the Blue Dragon featured in the first two games due to discrepancies between the in-game models, however this has not been confirmed. The game’s dragon models record for the Solo Wing states that, “The dragon has taken the form of one of the ancient dragons that destroyed the Imperial Capital long ago”, referring the Blue Dragon’s appearance in Panzer Dragoon.
When Edge’s dragon turned into the Solo Wing, Edge questioned whether this was the dragon’s true form. Fans have speculated that the Technology Destruction Faction who designed the dragon program intended for it to take this form, hence its reappearance in each of the Saturn Panzer Dragoon games, however there is no concrete information on this point. Edge noted that, with his dragon’s new form, Sestren now faced “winged death”.
The Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon Orta
Panzer Dragoon Orta does not feature the Blue Dragon in the main story. Fans have speculated that this was because the dragon program, the dragon’s other half, was no longer combined with the physical dragon in Panzer Dragoon Orta, and that the Blue Dragon form was somehow linked to this program. Although the Blue Dragon is absent from the story, players can unlock this dragon form in Panzer Dragoon Orta’s Pandora’s Box as a bonus dragon form. This playable dragon in Pandora’s Box is named the ‘Blue Dragon’ and cannot morph into other classes of the Solo Wing.
The Blue Dragon in Panzer Dragoon Mini
The Blue Dragon also made an appearance in the spin off title for Sega’s Game Gear portable system, Panzer Dragoon Mini. This dragon form was simply called “Blue” and was one of three playable dragon forms in the game. Although the game does not have a developed storyline connected to the main titles in the series, the distinctive blue, white, and orange dragon form present in the game is clearly supposed to represent the dragon’s definitive Blue Dragon form from Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Zwei, but is rendered differently to match Panzer Dragoon Mini’s distinct art style.
The Blue Dragon in the Panzer Dragoon Original Video Animation
The Blue Dragon was also featured in the Panzer Dragoon Original Video Animation. The video adaption was loosely based on the storyline of the original Panzer Dragoon and the Blue Dragon here chases after a rival black dragon with Kyle as his rider. Like in the Panzer Dragoon video game, the dragon’s mission is to reach and destroy the Tower, which is similarly achieved by the Blue Dragon’s horn lighting up. Notably, this Blue Dragon is shown only firing one laser at a time when facing Imperial ships, compared to the Blue Dragon in the games which can lock on to multiple targets. This version of the Blue Dragon had the ability to combine with Kyle, allowing the dragon-rider pair to take down the enemy dragon using a super attack. The abilities and differences of the Panzer Dragoon Original Video Animation Blue Dragon are not considered canonical.
